What were the challenges faced that required an innovative solution?
The construction industry is not necessarily a front runner in health and wellness compared to other industries, but we strongly believe that we can move the needle at Bancroft. So, I launched a Wellness Committee in the spring of 2017 to encourage employees to participate in company-sponsored health and wellness initiatives throughout the year. We reached out to experts for help in developing the program: the Lyons Companies (our insurance broker), the University of Delaware, and CardioKinetics.
We created the Be Wise & Well Biometric Screening Incentive Program, a five-point biometric screening system to promote healthier lifestyles. The program, through group and one-to-one education, helps employees better understand and prioritize how to address any health risks and/or how to stay on track to maintain their good health; access tools and resources to help reach their health improvement goals; enjoy better health; and obtain monetary incentives toward their employee-only medical premium contributions.
The first biometric screening took place in April 2018 and the second was held a year later. We saw a 104% increase in employee participation in this year’s screening; decreases in incidents of metabolic syndrome and hypertension; and a 15 percentage point increase in who met all five health criteria to 51%.
