Founded in 2010, DESCA is committed to making Delaware a leader in sustainable science and technology. By fostering collaboration between industry, academia and government, DESCA drives innovation, supports startups and strengthens the STEM talent pipeline to fuel the region’s economy.
Empowering Industry and Innovation
DESCA connects industry leaders with emerging technologies to advance green manufacturing, sustainable materials, and energy storage solutions. These initiatives help Delaware remain at the forefront of industrial innovation while promoting environmental responsibility. Through partnerships with research institutions and businesses, DESCA has facilitated groundbreaking projects, including efforts in clean energy solutions. The Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub, supported by $750 million from the U.S. Department of Energy, is projected to create over 20,000 jobs, strengthening the region’s clean energy economy. Since its inception, DESCA has supported 45+ startups, providing mentorship, advisory connections and investor engagement.
Companies showcased at DESCA’s Annual Investor Forum have collectively raised $100+ million in venture capital, securing development deals with Shell, GE, Cargill and AkzoNobel. In 2023, DESCA, in partnership with the University of Delaware and InsiteHub, secured $3 million to create an online educational platform to help scientists and biomedical researchers commercialize their innovations. This initiative further solidifies Delaware’s reputation as a hub for science-driven startups.
Building the Future STEM Workforce
To ensure Delaware has a strong, diverse talent pipeline, DESCA has engaged over 2,000 individuals through its workforce development programs. The Catalyzing Change: STEM Talent Conference, in partnership with FAME, Inc., connects students, educators and industry leaders, attracting participants from 30+ schools and 18 universities. DESCA’s “Ready to Launch” program introduces students to STEM career opportunities by featuring regional companies at the University of Delaware and Delaware State University (a nationally ranked HBCU). Additionally, DESCA is expanding workforce training initiatives focused on high-growth industries such as biotechnology, sustainable materials and energy storage.
Shaping the Future of Innovation
“An economic-focused application of science and technology is critical in resolving the largest problems facing modern societies. DESCA plays a key role in ensuring that the talent driving these solutions comes from Delaware.”
