The Vision Coalition of Delaware is a public-private partnership composed of a broad range of Delawareans who work together to improve Delaware’s public education.

In 2006, the coalition’s leadership developed the strategic Vision 2015 plan for public education, asking citizens to “imagine the best schools in the world for every Delaware student “¦ no exceptions “¦ no excuses.” Ten years later, with Delaware moving on more than 75 percent of the recommendations from that plan, the Vision Coalition collaborated with Delawareans to develop a new 10-year plan.

Starting in January 2014, 4,000 Delawareans shared their ideas, perspectives and opinions during the plan development process. The result is Student Success 2025, which will be released Sept. 16.

Delawareans contributed through:

  • A public online survey for sharing opinions and ideas about education
  • Six community conversations held in Sussex, Kent and New Castle counties
  • Twenty-five targeted presentations and meetings
  • A survey and conversations with more than 1,300 of Delaware’s students in grades 7-12
  • A MindMixer online discussion forum
  • Discussions at the seventh annual Vision Coalition Conference on Education, attended by more than 400 people

Their answers were condensed into a concept called the “North Star,” the “beacon” for recommendations that ultimately focused on the skills and attributes kids need to be successful. The North Star is an image with words, demonstrating what skills and attributes kids need to be successful in addition to core academic knowledge. The coalition believes in the power of a long-term vision to guide the state through the next decade, and sees the plan as an effort around which other initiatives in the state should align.

A steering committee was also established to guide the development on the new 10-year vision for Delaware public education. During the plan development process, six working groups were formed to draft recommendations in six core areas to help achieve the North Star vision. These recommendations include:

  • Early learning
  • Personalized learning
  • Postsecondary success
  • Educator support and development
  • Fair and efficient funding
  • System governance, alignment and performance

To join the Vision Coalition in reimagining the future of learning and to help make Student Success 2025 a reality, come out Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. to Delaware Technical Community College ““ Dover Campus. A small group of students will get the chance to meet with members of the coalition’s leadership team.

Save the date also for the annual conference on Oct. 28 at the University of Delaware’s Clayton Hall in Newark.
