Carly Levy MD, Fellowship Program Director and Palliative Care physician for Nemours/ Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children was honored with the 2021 Ilene Beal Courageous Provider Award by Courageous Parents Network, Inc.

The annual award recognizes a pediatric provider who delivers exceptional family-centered care in circumstances of serious childhood illness. Award recipients demonstrate qualities of compassion and empathy as they accompany families during difficult phases of their child’s illness, and show a willingness to consider various perspectives and collaborate with other pediatric specialists.

Dr. Levy of Swarthmore, PA, was nominated by Palliative Care Division Chief Elissa Miller, MD, and several colleagues for many reasons that can be summed up as:  always putting the child and family first. In her nomination of Dr. Levy, Dr. Miller described a scenario that included a life-limiting condition of infancy and a decision to withdraw or continue life support, complicated by the baby’s father being abroad, awaiting authorization to travel in order to be at the bedside. Facing tragic circumstances, Dr. Levy helped the family make choices that ultimately gave them peace and comfort.

The selection committee recognized Dr. Levy’s focus on ensuring that the care team understand and respond to family needs and concerns. Her signature phrase: “Let’s just name that,” inspired the committee, as it corresponds to CPN’s essential value of courage in working with colleagues and families in the face of often-unthinkable conversations and decisions.

Blyth Lord, Executive Director of CPN, said in a statement, “It is a great privilege to honor pediatric providers of this caliber. Their talent and commitment to children and their families are a model and inspiration for all of us who are seeking the best possible care experience in the face of terribly difficult circumstances. We thank the Ilene Beal Charitable Foundation for their generous commitment to celebrating the positive impact of pediatric palliative care on children and families.”
