VIEWPOINT: Delaware Burn Camp offers vital community service

Tragically, many Delaware children endure the physical and emotional scars of severe burns. The Delaware Burn Camp offers a vital lifeline for these young survivors, providing a supportive community where they can heal and connect with their peers.

This invaluable program was founded 15 years ago through the cooperative efforts of many people who realized the critical need for such a resource and championed its creation. The General Assembly responded with bipartisan support, passing several bills establishing the Delaware Burn Camp as a 501(c)3 charitable organization.

Supported by donations and contributions, the cost-free event is hosted at Camp Barnes, a Delaware State Police facility. It offers eligible children a week-long experience filled with camaraderie and activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking.

I deeply appreciate the dedicated volunteers and board of directors who have worked tirelessly to ensure the camp’s efforts.

As a former chief and lifelong member of the Seaford Volunteer Fire Department, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of burn injuries. While I fervently hope no child ever suffers such trauma, the likely reality is that some will and that the service provided by the Delaware Burn Camp will continue to be needed.

To ensure its future viability, I urge healthcare providers and citizens to promote the camp’s availability and otherwise support its altruistic mission.
