Truck-safety tech can cut injuries here

There were 1,864 crashes involving a truck tractor and semi-trailers in Delaware in 2016, but a new AAA Foundation report says advanced safety technology can prevent many truck-related crashes.

According to AAA, equipping all new and existing large trucks with lane-departure warnings and video-based on-board safety-monitoring systems could prevent up to 6,372 crashes in the U.S. each year, and prevent 1,342 injuries and 115 deaths.

Video-based onboard safety monitoring systems could prevent as many as 63,000 crashes, 17,733 injuries and 293 deaths in the U.S. annually, according to AAA estimates.

Automatic emergency breaking could prevent up to 5,294 crashes, 2,753 injuries and 55 deaths, and air-disc brakes could prevent up to 2,411 crashes, 1,1447 injuries and 37 deaths annually in the U.S., according to AAA.

The AAA survey found 61 percent of adults feel less safe passing large commercial trucks than passing passenger cars, but about a quarter of them said adding safety tech to trucks would help them feel better about sharing the road.
