(AP) — The Sussex County Council has approved a revised wastewater agreement with Rehoboth Beach.
Under the agreement, the county will continue to pay the city to treat wastewater from surrounding areas of the county’s sewer system and will contribute $22 million to the construction of the city’s new ocean outfall disposal system. Tuesday’s council vote follows similar action by city commissioners on Monday.
Construction is expected to begin this fall on the controversial outfall project, in which treated wastewater would be dumped into the Atlantic Ocean about a mile from Rehoboth’s popular tourist beach.
The outfall, part of a $52.5 million wastewater system project, was developed in response to a court order for the city to stop discharging wastewater into the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal near the entrance to Rehoboth Bay.
