The Delaware Housing Authority has awarded $5.5 million through the Strong Neighborhoods Housing Fund to address vacant, abandoned and foreclosed properties across the state.
More than 100 people showed up today at William Hicks Anderson Community Center on the West Side of Wilmington as Gov. John Carney, Mayor Mike Purzycki and New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer announced the grants.
Wilmington projects will receive $2.1 million administered through the Wilmington Neighborhood Conservancy Land Bank, Interfaith Community House of Delaware, the Wilmington Housing Partnership, Inter-Neighborhood Foundation and Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County.
The New Castle County Department of Community Services will create 10 housing units and rehab 17 along the Route 9 corridor.
In Dover, the nonprofit affordable housing developer NCALL Research and Central Delaware Habitat for Humanity’s will receive $1 million for 20 newly constructed homes.
The Milford Housing Development Corporation will receive $500,000 to build 10 new homes in neighborhoods surrounding the downtown of Milford.
The Laurel Redevelopment Corporation and the Sussex County Habitat for Humanity will receive $500,000 to construct 10 new homes in the Old Town area of Laurel.
The $5.5 million investment is expected to leverage about $15 million in private or other funding.
