Star Group shuts down operations

The Star Group, the largest woman-owned marketing firm in the U.S., closed its doors this week and posted a notice on its website saying a situation beyond the group’s control forced its closure.
The announcement was headlined “It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”
The website gave no details of what caused the company to close its doors or how many staffers lost their jobs, but it did say, “While we may be down, we are not out.” The tagline said “Looking forward to the next round.
It was not immediately apparent what the closure will mean to Star’s office at the Wilmington riverfront.
Founded in 1985, the Voorhess, N.J.-based group had offices around the country and boasted clients like Comcast, Teva, Tropicana Entertainment and Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
The Philadelphia Business Journal reported that Star employees received a memo Tuesday night saying, “Effective close of business today, it is with deepest regret that we must advise you that due to circumstances beyond our control, Star Group Communications, Inc. will cease to operate.”
Twitter lit up with the announcement. One person tweeted, “Rest in peace, Star Group.” Another, “Always sad to see a women-owned shop go.”
