Smokestack at Bancroft Mills imploded

The towering smokestack at the former Bancroft Mills site on the Brandywine River crumbled in a planned implosion yesterday morning.

Buccini Pollin Group, which owns the property, received the City permit to conduct the demolition last week.

The development group plans build a 350-apartment complex on the site of the former mill, which employed many resident from the nearby Forty Acres neighborhood.

The state’s Open Space Council, which helps oversee land protection and conservation, arranged a land swap for the property earlier this year.

A number of local residents gathered at Rockford Park to watch the 8:00 a.m. demolition.
