An estimated 112 million shoppers visited local independent businesses on Small Business Saturday last week, according to a survey from American Express and the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
That’s 13 percent more than in 2015.
About 81 percent of those who shopped encouraged friends or family to do it too. There were 135 million social media posts in support of Small Business Stautrday, up from 85 million last year.
The total number of consumers who opted to shop in bricks-and-mortar store dropped, however. The survey showed total spending at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday was $15.4 billion, down from $16.2 billion last year.
