WILMINGTON – Peter Augustine Lawler, an influential conservative writer and scholar, has been appointed editor of Modern Age, the quarterly journal published by the Greenville-based Intercollegiate Studies Institute.

Lawler, who has the lead article on National Affairs.com this week, will become the sixth editor in Modern Age’s 60-year history. Lawler, author or editor of 18 books and a thought leader in the intellectual right community, was chosen to succeed R.V. Young after a nationwide search.

Lawler’s first issue will be published in April. He writes from an intellectual Catholic conservative viewpoint.

“We are thrilled to have Peter taking the helm at Modern Age,” said institute president Charlie Copeland. “In these contentious, confusing times, Modern Age has an extraordinary opportunity to stake out a vision for conservatism today. Under Peter’s leadership, Modern Age—in print and online—will become the forum for stimulating debate and discussion of the most important ideas of concern to conservatives of all stripes.”

Lawler, whose latest piece on National Affairs.com centers on the upcoming Trump administration, called the appointment a privilege and an honor. “Few publications have as rich a tradition or pedigree as Modern Age,” Lawler said. “My responsibility is to make this distinguished journal not greater but maybe a bit more influential by involving more of our leading scholars and writers and securing a more prominent online and newsstand presence.”

Lawler is the Dana Professor of Government at Berry College and a blogger at National Review Online. In addition to National Affairs, he contributes to the Weekly Standard and New Atlantis, and he is the executive editor of Perspectives on Political Science, a quarterly.

The institute, founded in 1953, works to educate college students to embrace conservative values.
