New tech extends life of Delaware Memorial Bridge

Delaware Memorial Bridge got a new cable humidification system this week. The state-of-the-art system reduces environmental exposure to the suspension cables by controlling air flow. The cables will be wrapped in an air tight material fitted with injection and exhaustion ports, powered by plants housed in the anchorages of the bridge.

With this addition, the Delaware Memorial Bridge joins 25 other suspension bridges around the world equipped with cable preservation systems.

In 2016, the Delaware River and Bay Authority contracted with American Bridge Company in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania to construct the system.

The bridge spanning between Delaware and New Jersey handles 35 million vehicles per year.
