Mayor Purzycki welcomes Green Box to downtown Wilmington

Mayor Mike Purzycki yesterday a hosted ribbon cutting event for the Wilmington Green Box, a makeshift market and gathering place for healthy foods and jobs.

The project began in 2016 as a mobile food cart that hired at-risk youth while supplying locally-sourced food across Wilmington. It served food to over 600 community members and made over $5,000 in sales, according to the organization.

A second phase brought the nonprofit to a narrow vacant lot on Lower Market Street, where it sells food and holds events.

This revitalizing stretch of downtown Wilmington has also attracted food truck events, concerts, and new businesses in recent years.

The lot is outfitted with a wood sales window, comfortable lawn chairs and umbrellas, and a small stage. The Green Box sells fresh squeezed juice and produce from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
