Delaware Art Museum names executive director
Sam Sweet
Sam Sweet was appointed executive director of the Delaware Art Museum. Sweet will relocate to Wilmington from Washington, D.C., where he led several arts organizations over the past two decades.
Sweet worked as executive director at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, managing director of the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Va., and chief operating officer for the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art and Design.
Sweet currently teaches in George Mason University’s Masters in Arts Management program and owns a consulting practice that aids nonprofits in building organizational capacity. He holds a master’s degree in business administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a bachelor of arts degree in art history from Columbia University.

Second annual delaware charity challenge raises over $24,000 for area nonprofits
Teams that participated in the Second Annual Delaware Charity Challenge spring fundraising contest raised over $24,000 last month, according to Innovincent, organizer or the event.
Nineteen teams participated, representing 18 different charities.
The Delaware Charity Challenge is a unique fundraising and athletic competition designed to give organizations, families, and individuals a fun way to raise money and awareness for their favorite causes.
In the Spring Race to Raise fundraising competition, Team Veritext Legal Solutions took home top honors this year for raising $6,400 for the Ministry of Caring, including a $300 bonus prize for raising the most money.
Team OperaDelaware raised $4,975 and finished second, earning an additional $200 prize. Team Cure Sanfilippo Syndrome finished third, raising $3,070 for Team Sanfilippo Foundation, including a $100 prize.
The official nonprofit team fundraising competition was won by Team OperaDelaware ($4,975), followed by Meals on Wheels Delaware ($3,235 between its official team and the Monroe Energy team that designated Meals on Wheels Delaware as its beneficiary).
Donors can continue to donate to any of the team fundraising pages and to their selected charities until May 31, 2016.

Chamber names Hal Real Entrepreneur of the Year

Hal Real, founder and president of Real Entertainment Group, Inc./World Cafe Live, will be the recipient of its 2016 David J. Freschman Entrepreneur of the Year award. The award will be presented at the annual Chamber of Commerce Awards Luncheon on May 4.
Real said he formed Real Entertainment Group Inc. in order to “radically change the landscape for contemporary music audiences and artists.” In October 2004, he delivered the first installment of that promise by opening World Cafe Live, a live music venue, restaurant and events complex located in Philadelphia.
In 2011, World Cafe Live opened its second venue at The Queen Theatre on Market Street in Wilmington, Delaware. World Cafe Live at The Queen has served as a critical catalyst for the revitalization of the historic Market Street corridor in the heart of downtown Wilmington.
Named for the late David J. Freschman, the Chamber’s annual Entrepreneur of the Year award recognizes a CEO or business owner who has put everything on the line in order to translate an idea into a viable, sustainable enterprise.
Christiana Care Pink Ribbon Program receives Komen Philadelphia grant
For the 14th consecutive year, Christiana Care Health System received a $90,000 grant from Susan G. Komen Philadelphia to fund its Pink Ribbon Program, a free service pairing patients with bilingual navigators to improve access to mammography screenings.
The program, which is run by Christiana Care’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute, uses outreach navigators and partner agencies to assist individuals to schedule mammogram appointments, provide breast health education, find transportation and help find funding sources to cover the cost of the mammogram. The navigators also educate the community about breast health, cancer prevention and early detection.
Jewish Federation receives three Communicator Awards
The Jewish Federation of Delaware has received three awards recognizing creativity and marketing excellence from the 2016 Communicator Awards, the leading international awards program recognizing big ideas in marketing and communications. Founded two decades ago, the Communicator Awards receives over 6,000 entries from companies and agencies of all sizes, making it one of the largest awards of its kind in the world.
The federation received a Gold Award of Excellence in the Annual Reports Category for its 2014-2015 “Report to the Community” and Silver Awards of Distinction in the Special Event Category for its Men’s Nite Out – Laughs & Drafts Event, and in the Special Edition Magazine Category for its 2015 Shalom Delaware.
