Delaware’s ILC Dover, which manufactures high-performance flexible materials for products ranging from spacesuits to flood protection, celebrated its 70th anniversary at its Frederica headquarters today.

Started in 1947 as International Latex Corporation, ILC Dover is known for the production of space suits for NASA. Since the 1960s, ILC has been involved in space development and production programs.

ILC Dover has made two strategic acquisitions in the last few years: Grayling Industries in Alpharetta, Ga., and Rossens, a Swiss company that makes a line of products branded as Jet Solutions.

Earlier this year, the company unveiled the Resilient Tunnel Plug (RTP), a scalable technology intended to plug rail, automotive, or other tunnels from threats, including water. Once installed, the plugs can engage manually or automatically, inflating out of special canisters built into the tunnel wall.

Last month, the company was awarded patents for its Flex-Gate®, Flex-Wall®, and Flex-Cover® flood-proofing products. The systems are designed to be stored at the point of use and can be deployed by one or two individuals to protect critical assets in a flood.
