House to hold hearing on reforming Coastal Zone Act

The House Natural Resources Committee is holding a hearing tomorrow on a proposed bill that would modify the Costal Zone Act — the environmental legislation that has restricted industry on the Delaware coastline for the past 46 years.

House Bill 180 would allow manufacturing activity to return to 14 former industrial sites. It would also allow bulk transfer at nine of the sites, allowing the movement of bulk industrial materials between ships and coastal facilities.

The bill has supporters and detractors from both sides of the aisle. Environmental advocates, meanwhile, have rallied against the legislation.

“This committee hearing is the best chance we have to stop this bill,” a press release from the Delaware chapter of the Sierra Club stated.

The hearing will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the House Chamber at Legislative Hall.
