Food Bank of Delaware today announced a new workforce development program set to launch this fall.
The Delaware Food Works will offer one-day, one-week and 11-week training programs in warehousing, agriculture and food service.
“The Food Bank of Delaware is more than just a warehouse that accepts and distributes food to meet the emergency food needs of Delawareans,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO Patricia Beebe. “We are working to eliminate hunger by providing Delawareans with the job and life skills they need to obtain and keep jobs that pay sustainable wages.

Here’s a breakdown of the programs:
Food Service:
- The Culinary School: 14-week daytime training program that prepares students for entry-level employment in the food service industry. The next session of The Culinary School begins Tuesday, September 4. Class meets Monday ““ Friday from 9:00 a.m. ““ 4:00 p.m. Scholarships are available.
- ManageFirst: Daytime curriculum is designed for individuals working in the food service industry who are interested in attaining additional skills to increase their pay and positions. Session two of this summer course begins Monday, July 23.
- ServSafe®: One or two-day training in the principles of food safety presented by registered ServSafe® instructors. The next class takes place at the Food Bank in Newark on August 27.
Warehousing:
- L.O.G.I.C. (Logistics, Operations, General Warehousing and Inventory Control): 11-week training program that prepares students for careers in the warehousing/logistics industry. Class takes place at the Food Bank’s warehouse in Newark. The pilot class begins Monday, September 10. Class meets Monday-Friday from 11:00 a.m. ““ 6:00 p.m. Scholarships are available through the Delaware Department of Labor for 10 students.
Agriculture:
- F.A.S.T. (Farm and Agriculture Skills Training): Class takes place on the Corteva Agriscience Farm at 222 Lake Drive in Newark with the Food Bank’s Farm Manager. This 14-week program meets three days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) from 8:00 a.m. ““ 1:00 p.m., and class begins Monday, October 29. Scholarships are available.
“Delaware Food Works houses all of our workforce development programs and future programming related to social entrepreneurship and small business incubation when we move to our new home at 222 Lake Drive,” Beebe said. “The possibilities are truly endless in what we can do with Delaware Food Works to not only make our organization self-sustaining financially, but to give community members the tools needed to lift themselves out of poverty.”
