Federal labor board settles lawsuit against Dover hospital

DOVER, Del. (AP) — A federal judge has approved the dismissal of a lawsuit by the National Labor Relations Board against Kent General Hospital.

Attorneys reached a settlement in the case this week after the NLRB sought a preliminary injunction preventing Kent General from interrogating, terminating or otherwise discriminating against employees pending resolution of a board complaint alleging that the hospital has engaged in unfair labor practices.

The complaint involved emergency room nurse Brent Garfield, who allegedly was targeted for retaliation and forced to resign after challenging management behavior and encouraging other employees to express concerns about working conditions and patient safety.

According to the lawsuit, another nurse told investigators that most of her colleagues believe Garfield was terminated for being outspoken about issues at the hospital.
