Delaware could reach a population of 1 million by 2020.

According to a report in The News Journal, Delaware is one of six states with less than 1 million people, but that could change by 2020 if its recent growth rate of about 1 percent each year continues.

The most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that a total of 945,934 people lived in the state in 2015. That’s up from 897,936 in 2010.

State experts say the state should add about 10,000 people each year until 2020.

Those 65 years old or older accounted for 17 percent of the state’s population in 2015. In 2010, that percentage was 14.4.

The federal data also shows that the U.S. population as a whole grew 4.1 percent between 2010 and 2015.
