Christ Our King Catholic Church in Wilmington, operating at 28th and Madison Streets since 1926, will close sometime this fall, the Diocese of Wilmington has announced.

The exact closure date is still being discussed, but it is projected to be sometime between the end of September and the end of November.

The closure is due to dwindling Mass attendance, and the inability of the small parish community to financially support the substantial physical plant. The Most Reverend W. Francis Malooly, bishop of the Diocese of Wilmington, said 115 Catholic families in the parish cannot support a church and related parish physical plant that was built to serve 2,000 families. Mass attendance has declined to an average of 52 people at each of the three weekend Masses.
