DG Market to open in Harrington

HARRINGTON – A bright yellow and green sign now announces the up-and-coming DG Market where Rite Aid once stood along U.S. Route 13, signaling new opportunities for employment and food access.

The store in Harrington, located at 17069 S Dupont Hwy., became a Rite Aid back in 2007 after the Jean Coutu Group purchased a portion of the Eckerd Pharmacy Chain, rebranding the stores purchased as Rite Aid. The Harrington site was recently purchased on May 16 by Jhama Properties, LLC., for just over $2.5 million and almost immediately installed DG Market signage.

The sight is a familiar one not just across the state, but across the country as Dollar General ramps up its expansion and renovation efforts.

In its first quarter report for 2025, the company announced an increase in its operating profit of 5.5%, reaching a total of $576.1 million. As leaders look to a strong start to the year, they also announced that the company is well on its way in terms of expansion and remodeling projects.

The report cites about 4,885 real estate projects for this year along, which includes the opening of 575 new stores across the nation and 15 new stores in Mexico. Dollar General is also working to remodel more than 4,000 stores and relocate about 45 stores, according to the report.

The city of Harrington has not heard yet from Dollar General as to when its new store will open, but Code Enforcement Officer John Long said they expect it to be soon.

“This market will give the residents a cost-effective option along with Food Lion and Byler’s,” he told the Delaware Business Times.

DG Market also recently opened a new location in Frederica and other sites have been noticed across the state.
