Delaware State University receives record alumni gift

Dover, Del. — Members of the Delaware State College Class of 1965 presented their alma mater with a $104,000 donation as part of their 50th anniversary celebration. It was the largest gift ever presented to Delaware State University by an alumni class.

Sixty-two members of the class contributed to the fundraising drive, called the “Culture of Giving.”

Presenting the Class of 1965 gift: Evalynn Young Brunswick, Tina Strong, Carolyn Golden Hebsgaard, Jimmie Strong, Sharon Dixon Drew (represent her husband Dr. Martin Drew), Maurice Pritchett, Delores Harris and DSU President Harry L. Williams.

“It originally began with the idea that if we could get 20 alums to give $5,000, then we would raise $100,000 for the University,” said Jimmy Strong, one of the organizers of the fundraiser.

The Class of 1965 made the presentation of their gift during a reception hosted by DSU President Harry L. Williams and his wife Dr. Robin Williams at their home last week.

“This is historic, because you made a commitment and you exceeded it,” said Williams. “This gift is not only tremendously remarkable as a reflection of your love for your alma mater, but also as a new standard for alumni support of DSU.”

Members of the class have also pledged to set aside $25 per month to add to the amount they’re raised.
