CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Delaware scores high on internet connectivity, according to Akamai Technologies’ fourth quarter 2016 State of the Internet Report, which tracks connection speeds, broadband adoption, internet disruptions and internet protocol implementation.
Delaware ranked first among states and the District of Columbia in average data transfer speeds, with 83 percent at 10 megabits per second (MBPS). It edged out Rhode Island, the top state in the third-quarter.
Among the 50 states and D.C., only 34 boasted average connection speeds above 15 megabits per second. Delaware’s average was 22.4 MBPS, making it the third-ranked. The highest speed was 26.7 MBPS in the District of Columbia.
Delaware was the nationwide leader for broadband adoption of at least 4 MBPS, with 98 percent of users above 4 MBPS, a 1.9 percent increase over the fourth quarter of 2015.
Internet speeds have increased worldwide since Akamai first published a speeds report in 2008. Then, only 16 percent of users had broadband 5 MBPS or higher. Now 25 percent of users worldwide have speeds 15 MBPS or higher.
