(AP) — A Delaware cabinet member who was a holdover from the previous gubernatorial administration and has gone nearly a year without being renominated or replaced is leaving to take a position at Delaware State University.
News outlets report the university announced Thursday that Labor Secretary Patrice Gilliam-Johnson will become its dean of graduate, adult and continuing studies after she leaves the department in February.
Former Gov. Jack Markell appointed Gilliam-Johnson in 2016 as the agency faced allegations of racism and discrimination. She was unanimously confirmed. When Gov. John Carney took over, he nominated 11 department heads, including three holdovers, but didn’t name a labor secretary, citing concern that Gilliam-Johnson wouldn’t win Senate confirmation.
In a statement Thursday, Carney said he would’ve renominated her at the start of this legislative session.
