Delaware buyers lead sales at new coastal community in Lewes

Delawareans looking for a piece of coastal living are leading a buying spree in Lewes.

A new 423-home community called Governors, developed by Jack Lingo Asset Management with construction by the Schell Brothers, has sold 110 homes since launching sales in June 2018.

Schell Brothers Community Sales Manager Adam Pettengell says the lack of residential space east of Route 1 in Lewes, particularly along Gills Neck Road, has contributed to the pace of sales.

“Land is scarce on Gills Neck Road and people knew if they didn’t move here, they may never have an opportunity to live in this prime location,” he said.

Pettengell added that 50 percent of sales in the Governors are Delaware residents, and a quarter already reside in Lewes.

“This is not typical for our market,” he said. “Normally, we have buyers that are retiring to Delaware from elsewhere or are purchasing a second vacation home. But “˜the locals’ know that this location and price point are perfect for their next new home at the beach.”

Schell Brothers is based in Rehoboth Beach and was also behind the “Senators” housing development located nearby on Gills Neck Road.
