The DE Turf Sports Complex, located in Milford, held its official ribbon cutting over the weekend. The ceremony capped off an eight-year effort to bring a major sports tourism destination to Delaware. The venue is the largest of its kind in the mid-Atlantic.
“We saw a need for a sports tourism destination in Delaware,” said Bill Strickland, chairman of the DE Turf Board of Directors. “That’s exactly what we now have. It’s an asset and economic driver not just for central Delaware but for the entire state.”
The all-turf, 12-field complex hosts traveling sports teams and sporting events, such as College Connections, which brought 84 hockey teams and 4,000 visitors to the complex over Easter weekend.
DE Turf estimated the complex would create $18 million in economic impact. That estimate was based on 10 major events per year, a benchmark that has already been exceeded: The coming year has 20 events on the calendar.
The complex is also open to local teams and events.
“We also know this is a valuable resource for the local community, where local teams/clubs can play. Plus, everyone can register at DETurf.com for summer leagues and camps or to stay up to date on all of our programs and offerings year round,” said Chris Giacomucci, DE Turf’s executive director.
