DBT40 Honoree: Jenn Walters-Michalec of Capital One

AGE: 37
TITLE: Community Affairs Manager
COMPANY: Capital One
WORKS IN: Wilmington

What the nominator said:

Savvy, authentic, and expert; these are just some of the words that come to mind when I think about Jennifer. Her passion for underserved communities, social justice and the prosperity of our state is unmatched, and she is inherently a learner able to enter any field and swiftly understand the core of the businesses and strategies to maintain a competitive edge.”

Social media platform you can’t live without:

“Twitter “¦ brevity is a lost art.”

Biggest break:

“Helping the filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan and his wife, Dr. Bhavna Shyamalan, build their family foundation from the ground up. This forced me to wear many hats, learn how to be adaptable, and frankly made me extremely accountable for results.”

Two words that best describe you:

Tenacious and creative.

Work/life balance technique you recommend:

“Balancing’ is pretty difficult because you cannot evenly distribute all responsibilities at all times; sometimes work needs more, sometimes home needs more. Work/life integration is a bit more realistic but taking time to disappear – really disappear – is absolutely necessary and OK, even though I continue to struggle with that.”

Your advice for the next generation:

“Don’t ever let yourself be put at the “˜kids table.’ There is a lot of work to be done and your unique point of view and unique set of experiences are valued and important to completing that work.”

In one sentence, define success:

“Given my career in philanthropy I feel compelled to share that I don’t believe success will ever be rooted in money; rather success is building authentic and transformational relationships with others and utilizing those relationships to improve communities and live in solidarity with one another.”
