Age: 34
Title: Research Group Leader
Workplace: Dow Electronic Materials
Bryan Barton’s interest in innovation brought him to Delaware from Michigan, led him from research scientist to research group leader, and fueled his 22 patent applications for carbon fibers and high-performance electronic materials. He has also co-authored 19 external papers in esteemed journals, including the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Inorganic Chemistry, Carbon, and Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics, but who’s counting? An accomplished scientist, Barton leads a successful Dow program that combines polymer chemistry, materials science, chemistry and process development to introduce breakthrough innovations in low-cost carbon fibers.
But Barton has also found a way to spread his love of innovation and science to others by serving as the coordinator for the Delaware installment of You Be the Chemist Challenge. The annual event brings together more than 50 middle school students from across the state to participate in a quiz-style chemistry competition. The challenge results in one child advancing to the Chemical Education Foundation’s national competition.
