Cutbacks and changes at News Journal

As part of a corporate restructuring at parent company Gannett, the News Journal will lose at least two staffers.

Meghan Montemurro, the paper’s Phillies reporter, and Alonzo Small, a breaking-news reporter, announced their jobs were eliminated on social media.

Jeff Mordock, one of the paper’s two business reporters, is leaving for the Washington Times, and Scott Goss, the other, will be reassigned to cover the state legislature.

News Journal Editor David Ledford did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A Gannett announcement Wednesday said the reductions would affect “less than 1 percent” of its employees. That could result in about 210 jobs lost across the company, according to Gannett.

Associated Press reported a Gannett editor in El Paso, Tex., said he will resign in order to preserve reporting positions at his paper.

Robert Moore, a winner of the Benjamin C. Bradlee Editor of the Year Award from the National Press Foundation, said he’ll leave the El Paso Times on Oct. 6. However, Gannett officials said they’ll work quickly to name a replacement.
