DPH updates COVID-19 numbers for Thursday, May 21
The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) announced 192 new positive cases have been confirmed and that 7 more Delawareans — 317 in all — have passed away due to complications from COVID-19. The deceased range in age from 21 to 103 years old.
As of May 21, the state’s COVID-19 case statistics cumulatively since March 11 include 8,386 total laboratory-confirmed cases — 3,053 of them in New Castle County, 1,281 in Kent County and 4,006 in Sussex County. The state said preliminary data based on reporting by state and commercial laboratories, indicate there have been 39,156 negative cases.
There are 220 Delawareans who are currently hospitalized. To date, 4,130 Delawareans who have tested positive have recovered.
Div. of Public Health awarded $67M grant to expand testing and data collection
The Division of Public Health was awarded a $67 million Epidemiology Laboratory Capacity grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to implement expanded testing capacity for COVID-19, and support the establishment of a modernized public health surveillance system.
The funding will be used for hiring staff for enhanced laboratory, surveillance, informatics, and other workforce capacity, strengthening laboratory testing, implementing new and advanced technologies for electronic data exchange at the public health lab and improving our surveillance and reporting of electronic health data.
