April 21

DPH updates COVID-19 numbers through Monday, April 20, at 6 p.m.

The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) announced 186 more positive cases and that 10 more Delawareans — 82 in all — have passed away due to complications from COVID-19, ranging in age from 32 to 103 years old.

DPH announced on April 19 that it was shifting to reporting case data earlier in the day to provide information in a more timely manner, and ensure the accuracy of the information being reported.  All data reported through the daily updates are based on data received as of 6 p.m. the previous day.

As of 6 p.m., Monday, April 20, the state’s COVID-19 case statistics cumulatively since March 11 include 2,931 total laboratory-confirmed cases — 1,303 of them in New Castle County and 1,139 in Sussex County — with 1,600 of them female and 1,322 male. The state said preliminary data based on reporting by state and commercial laboratories, indicate there have been 13,725 negative cases, meaning that about 16.7% of those tested have tested positive.

There are 263 Delawareans who are currently hospitalized, with 71 of them in critical condition, and 565 Delawareans who have tested positive have recovered.

As of 6 p.m. yesterday, there have been 218 positive COVID-19 cases involving residents of long-term care facilities in Delaware, an increase of 51 since Sunday. Forty-eight residents of Delaware long-term care facilities — including Milford Center (Genesis Healthcare) with 18 and Little Sisters of the Poor in Newark with 11 — have died from complications related to COVID-19.

SoDel Concepts Raises $87k for Beebe COVID-19 Relief Fund

REHOBOTH BEACH — SoDel Concepts raised $87,042.25 — 100% of its sales on March 18 — for the Beebe Healthcare COVID-19 Relief Fund, which was organized by the Beebe Medical Foundation to support Beebe health care workers on the frontline of the pandemic.

During the state of emergency due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, SoDel Concepts has offered online ordering and payment and contactless curbside pickup at 11 of its 12 restaurants. The hospitality group dedicated all of the sales on April 18 to the fund and reached out to the restaurants’ customers to encourage takeout.

“The response was more than we could have imagined,” said Scott Kammerer, president of SoDel Concepts. “We nearly sold out of the takeout meals at all the restaurants on April 18, and we sold 500 desserts. It goes to show you how much our community values our health care workers. Our team did an amazing job filling the orders. We are thankful for their dedication and their commitment to the community.”

Tom Protack, president of the Beebe Medical Foundation, praised SoDel Concepts for the contribution.

“The Beebe Medical Foundation is so grateful for this wonderful gift from our friends at SoDel, who have supported us for many years,” he said. “This amazing gesture — to give back 100% of their proceeds — speaks volumes about their strong and loyal support of Beebe.  SoDel has been with us through the good times, and now they are making a major gift during the bad times.”

Beebe Medical Foundation Cancels Fundraising Events Due to Pandemic

LEWES – The Beebe Medical Foundation has decided to cancel five out of its seven upcoming major fundraising events, including the Beebe Bash, which supports Beebe’s emergency department. All five events were scheduled for April through June.

Marnie Oursler

Marnie Oursler, founder of Marnie Custom Properties in Bethany Beach, redirected her company’s $10,000 Platinum Sponsorship for the Bash to the COVID-19 Relief Fund.

This fund is supporting Beebe’s emergent needs as it faces the surge of COVID-19 patients, paying for protective equipment for caregivers and testing for the community.

“What an amazing gesture of Marnie and her great team,” said Tom Protack, president of Beebe Medical Foundation. “We have canceled so many events that raise funds for our cancer center and other departments.  We are grateful for her support in our time of need. The Foundation looks forward to the day when we can gather with our friends and donors once this pandemic passes.”

One new event, the Beebe Brunch, created to support the new South Coastal Health Campus near Millville and three well-known golf tournaments – Baywood Golf Classic and Ruddo Golf Classic, both supporting Beebe’s oncology services, and Progress for Prostate which supports Beebe’s Center Robotic Surgery and Men’s Health – have all been canceled.
