CHRISTIANA – ChristianaCare has added Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates of Delaware, a pre-eminent state private practice in its field, to its network.
Founded in 1979, Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates includes three physicians board-certified in the colon and rectal surgery field: Drs. Frederick Denstman, Carey Nathan, and Shanthi Shakamuri.
Located in Medical Arts Pavilion 1 on the Newark-area campus, it became a part of ChristianaCare effective Jan. 23 and was renamed ChristianaCare Colorectal Surgery at Newark.
“We’re incredibly excited to welcome the caregivers of Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates to ChristianaCare as we join together in service to our community,” said Dr. Gerard J. Fulda, chair of the Department of Surgery at ChristianaCare, in a statement. “The practice has long shared a deep commitment to serving our patients. This integration will advance our ability to make a positive impact on the health of our patients through the colon and rectal services we provide.”
The practice comes to ChristianaCare just over a year after the passing of Dr. Joseph D’Amico, one of its co-founders. D’Amico was well-known at ChristianaCare, having completed thousands of procedures over a more than four-decade career in the state and becoming a sought-after local expert in the surgeries.
In joining Delaware’s largest health care system, the surgical practice will gain access to ChristianaCare’s secure patient portal, electronic medical records and easy referrals to ChristianaCare’s regional network of primary and specialty care services.
The physicians specialize in surgical and nonsurgical treatment of conditions in the colon, rectum and anus. Services include colonoscopy for colon cancer screening, minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic colon surgery, the surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, colitis, Crohn’s disease, colon and rectal cancer, hemorrhoids, fistulas, anal fissures, fecal incontinence and many other conditions.
“Our practice is excited to join ChristianaCare, which will advance our care coordination and ensure our physicians and team continue to deliver the highest quality colon and rectal surgery to our patients. Through a collaborative care-plan approach, our clinicians partner with the patient, their caregiver and referring physicians to ensure constant communication through the patient’s continuum of care. These relationships will be strengthened with our integration with ChristianaCare,” the three Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates physicians said in a statement announcing the move.
