CDC researchers recommend efforts to reduce Wilmington crime

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Federal researchers say increased collaboration and data sharing among Delaware social service agencies could help stem the tide of violent crime in Wilmington.
Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommend in a report released Tuesday that Delaware officials develop risk-assessment tools to identify young people who are at a high risk for involvement in violent crime and who might benefit from prevention efforts. Those efforts could include jobs programs, peer outreach and mentorship, educational and school-based programs, counseling, and family focused programs.
Wilmington had a record 154 shooting victims in 2013. There were 127 shooting victims and 23 shooting deaths last year.
CDC researchers noted that Delaware’s homicide rate per 100,000 people more than doubled from 1999 to 2012, outpacing that of every other state.
