Beebe to open $48M comprehensive cancer center

MILLVILLE — Beebe Healthcare will open the doors of its new $48 million comprehensive cancer center on July 14 at the rising South Coastal Health Campus, ending that chapter in the hospital system’s continuing expansion plans.

The new cancer facility is the second in the county, and the first in western Sussex County. The 43,000 square-foot center offers the latest technology in radiation treatment at the South Coastal Health Campus, which opened its free-standing emergency room in May.

“This cancer center is a reflection of the fact that there are so many patients in the southern end of the country that need ongoing therapy, and it’s all [close to] the walk-in care and the imaging lab in Millville,” Beebe President and CEO Dr. David Tam told Delaware Business Times in a previous interview this summer.

Patients at the South Coastal cancer center will have access to high-tech equipment, including a linear accelerator for treatments. It can rotate 360 degrees and has advanced imaging technology that makes a precise treatment that could reduce the amount of radiation needed.

The infusion center includes a fireplace and 12 treatment areas that offer private, semi-private or public seating that gives patients the choice to decide where they want their treatment. A healing garden also provides a serene vista during treatment as well.

Beebe Healthcare Executive Director of Oncology Services Barry Hamp said the South Coastal cancer center reaffirms Beebe’s commitment to delivering excellent care for patients without the need for a long drive.

“Our team is dedicated to delivering the best possible patient experience at every opportunity. Knowing that life with cancer can be difficult, we wanted this facility to feel warm and comfortable, easing some of the burden,” Hamp said.

With the new center complete, Beebe Healthcare has eyes set on the $125 million four-story specialty surgical hospital campus off Route 24. At 135,000-square-feet with 12 private inpatient rooms and four operating rooms, it may be the hospital’s more ambitious developments. Beebe officials also unveiled plans for a Milton outpatient campus this year.
