Delaware Business Times’ redesigned print edition won the paper’s first AABP design award as well as a Bronze Medal in Overall Small-Circulation Newspaper.

WILMINGTON – The Delaware Business Times won a record six awards in the 2022 Alliance of Area Business Publishers (AABP) contest, including a third-place finish for Newspaper of the Year for its circulation size.

AABP, with 65 member publications across North America, is dedicated to the business news industry and is among the most respected awards for DBT’s industry. Notably, the awards contest is judged annually by the faculty of the esteemed University of Missouri School of Journalism. The 2022 awards total was the most in DBT’s history, topping last year’s record total of five.

“We are honored every day to cover and promote Delaware’s business community. To receive national recognition from our peers with not one but six awards is both humbling and amazing,” said Michael Reath, publisher of the Delaware Business Times. “Hats off to our partners around the state and especially to our editorial and design team for their outstanding work.”

DBT won third place for Small-Circulation Newspaper of the Year, its second-consecutive award in the capstone category that considers the breadth of a publication’s presentation and reporting.

“Branded covers with large images pull readers into the lead story. Many faces and names throughout the issues show that the staff put effort into including their community. The material feels authoritative and plugged in. There is a good mix of stories, with something for everyone,” the judges wrote in their review.

Associate Editor Katie Tabeling

In reporting awards, associate editor Katie Tabeling won a first-place award for best scoop for her May 2021 story “Middletown targeted for mega pharmaceutical campus” that revealed the massive WuXi STA Pharmaceutical campus for the first time. Spotting a small notice in a town agenda, she was the only media member in attendance for a hearing that revealed what has become one of Delaware’s largest economic development projects.

“Being part of a two-person staff means being everywhere at once … Not only did her story catch other media unaware, but many state leaders as well,” the judges wrote.

Tabeling and editor Jacob Owens shared a first-place award for recurring feature for the “In the C-Suite” series that profiles the careers and thinking of Delaware’s chief executives.

“Beyond offering insight into local business leaders, these articles show deep reporting, with inspiration and life lessons sprinkled amid the business acumen. Whether telling the story of a health care CEO’s unconventional background or the initial reluctance of a family business leader, the pieces are well-written and engrossing,” the judges wrote.

Editor Jacob Owens

Owens won a second-place award for editorial writing for his February 2021 column, “Delaware can, and should, lead on green tech,” which discussed the benefits to the state and private employers of embracing a move to renewable energy.

“An informed opinion is situated in a well-reported editorial. The writer makes a clear case for Delaware’s private employers to take bold positions in support of renewable energy in the green revolution. The arguments challenge collaborators to find local opportunities in a global challenge,” the judges wrote.

The Delaware Business Times, which completed its first print product redesign last summer, also won its first AABP design award, taking home a second-place award for page design in a small-circulation tab newspaper.

“Bold photo display distinguishes the covers. There is an obvious visual effort in packaging the table of contents. Overall, the design is very clean and organized with a wonderful control of typography and ample line spacing that enhances a modular, easy to follow layout. Nearly every story includes easy-to-read breakouts. The At a Glance/By the Numbers packages serve up solid, interesting, informative graphics. Documentary photographs offer more context than just portraits,” the judges wrote.

In addition to its editorial work, the Delaware Business Times’ STUFF publication, concerning workforce training and job opportunities for teens, won a first-place award for best ancillary publication. It’s the third consecutive first-place award for STUFF and fourth award in four years.

In other state and regional award programs, DBT has won 19 awards for its coverage in 2021.
