Never forget where you came from

Whether it was from the farm or the big city, whether it was the minimum-wage job or the apprenticeship in an insignificant organization, most of us did not start where we stand today. Remember what it was like to be broke? Remember how bad your talent was in the beginning? By never forgetting where you came from, you ensure you fight hard to not go backward. You ensure you can always remain grateful and humble so you can keep doing what you love.

Serve others well

Every single person on the planet is rewarded for one thing and one thing only and that is serving other people. When you enjoy what you do, you will work hard to become excellent at it. When you are excellent at what you do, you will serve others better by doing it well. The more you serve others well, the higher your reward. In our business, you are rewarded for serving our guest.

Take responsibility

Responsibility is “response ability.” Literally, it is the ability to respond. Not to complain. Not to blame. Not to make excuses. To respond. To meet challenges head on. To find solutions. To get things done when they need to be done.

Attitude is everything

“If you don’t like something change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” – Mary Engelbreit;

“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change their future by merely changing their attitude.” – Oprah Winfrey.

Work the middle

Find the common ground. Don’t be too extreme one way or another. Compromise. “The past is where you learned the lesson. The future is where you apply the lesson. Don’t give up in the middle!”  – Pancakeism.

Be the Buffalo

Face the storms and fears we are avoiding, moving toward them with faith and confidence, knowing that beyond the storm the clouds fade away and sunshine awaits.

Be courageous

God told Joshua to be strong and courageous. (Joshua 1) Courage is the ability to do the right thing all the time, no matter the cost, no matter how painful or uncomfortable it might be. It takes courage to say “no.” It takes courage to stand up for your convictions and stand by your faith.

Results matter

“You can have the results you want, or you can have all the reasons in the world why you can’t have them. But you can’t have both. Reasons or results: you get to choose.” – Pancakeism

Strive for excellence

Excellence is worth it. It separates you from the status quo. It makes you and everyone around you better. Sure, it takes time. Yes, it takes commitment. Of course, there will be naysayers. But excellence is worth it.

Don’t give up

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low, and the debts are high
and you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but do not quit.
