Millennial Summit 2017 took place today inside the Chase Center on the Riverfront. The all-day leadership and development conference is the first of its kind to target the growing number of millennial professionals in Delaware.
The event was planned by a coalition of more than 50 companies and nonprofits across the state. Robert Herrera, co-founder of The Mill, and Charlie Vincent, owner of Innovincent, were the lead organizers.
A number of local leaders attended to express their support for the generation’s efforts to assert its identity in the state.
“The city of Wilmington can be your city,” said Mayor Mike Purzycki, who spoke during the conference lunch break. The mayor outlined some of the upcoming improvements to the city, such as more housing and entertainment options, that he says are crucial to retaining millennials.
Gov. John Carney also kicked off the conference with some opening remarks on the need to embrace millennials to drive the state economy forward.
The conference had a general focus on career development and civic engagement. Breakout sessions tackled topics such as workplace diversity, green technology, networking, public speaking, and the importance of volunteering.
