Delaware State University, the University of Delaware and Wesley College are once again recognized on the U.S. News and World Report’s 2021 Best Colleges Report.
In the rankings of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, U.S. News & World Report placed Delaware State University third among public HBCU and eleventh in overall HBCUs.
“No ranking can accurately capture how important institutions like Delaware State University are to ensuring that any barrier to higher education can be overcome. We do more with substantively less and still punch well above our weight in delivering a diverse talent pipeline in every field of human endeavor,” said DSU President Tony Allen in a statement. “Like the Wall Street Journal rankings, U.S. News helps tell an important part of our story, but there is so much more to say.”
The University of Delaware was ranked at No. 40 among the nation’s top public universities and ties with Auburn University, University of Arizona, University of California-Merced, University of California-Santa Cruz and University of Utah.
In its latest ranking, U.S. News also recognizes several academic programs and initiatives at the university:
- 7th (of 32) in Best Chemical Engineering Programs
- 53rd (of 206) in Best Engineering Programs (among engineering programs whose highest degree is a doctorate)
- 96th (of 481) in Best Computer Science Programs (new this year)
- 97th (of 511) in Best Business Programs
- 63rd (of 142) in Best Colleges for Veterans
As one of the nation’s oldest universities and one of the few institutions nationwide with Land Grant, Sea Grant and Space Grant missions, UD’s Carnegie classification among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” places it in the top 3% of all U.S. universities and colleges.

Wesley College was ranked at No. 41 for ‘Regional Colleges North’ and ties with Bay State College, Becker College, Berkley College, Boricua College, Central Penn College, the College of Westchester, CUNY – Medgar Evers College, Eastern Nazarene College, Five Towns College, Mitchell College, University of Maine – Augusta and Villa Maria College. Wesley also tied with the University of Maine – Augusta for the 30th rank in ‘Top Performers on Social Mobility.’
