WILMINGTON – The Surgical Review Corporation has accredited ChristianaCare’s Wilmington Hospital as a Center of Excellence in Hernia Surgery, an achievement that’s been awarded to fewer than 1 percent of hospitals that perform hernia surgeries. Wilmington Hospital earned this accreditation, which is determined by an independent, external process of evaluation, by providing patients with the most advanced and innovative approaches available for procedures such as laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
“Our surgical teams that perform hernia operations hold themselves to the highest professional standards and commit to being exceptional today and even better tomorrow,” said Gerard Fulda M.D., leader of ChristianaCare’s Surgical Services Line in a statement. “Our surgical colleagues actively listen to patient concerns and develop comprehensive treatment plans that lead to exceptional outcomes. Our accreditation from the Surgical Review Corporation reflects the success of this approach.”
Status as an accredited Center of Excellence means that Wilmington Hospital has met nationally recognized standards for quality and patient safety. The Surgical Review Corporation notes that not all hospitals and surgeons seek accreditation, and not all hospitals that undergo the rigorous on-site inspection process are granted accreditation.

- Jeffry Zern, director of minimally invasive surgery for General Surgery at ChristianaCare.
- Jaime Cesar Giraldo Arango M.D., who specializes in general surgery, critical care, trauma and laparoscopic surgery.
Health care organizations and surgeons who seek accreditation by the Surgical Review Corporation undergo an extensive self-assessment and on-site inspection. This process includes physicians, nurses and administrators who are actively involved in the accredited program. The inspection is consultative and educational, presenting the best practices to help an organization or surgeon improve its care and services.
