Evans Farms is a 2,000-acre grain and produce operation that serves nearly 70 grocery stores throughout Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and the company’s watermelons are sold across the United States and into Canada. Evans Farms got its start in 1943 on 80 acres, and a small roadside wagon that operated on the honor system and generated lunch money for Kevin and his sister Kim. Today, Evans Farms is a 6,000-square-foot produce market that is also home to The Frozen Farmer, the family’s on-farm creamery and sorbet shop.

It wasn’t a category this year, but Evans Farms specializes in “agritourism” with a seemingly endless procession of field trips, festivals and outdoor movies at the farm in Bridgeville.

The company is a small, family-run operation with its application listing 10 family members. “Many of us don’t hold official titles, but we all work together to pull our weight for the team … Above all we are family and that always comes first when running our business,” the application says.

Kevin Evans, a third-generation farmer, became the sole owner and operator of his family farm at the age of 27 after his father Joe died in the line of duty as a Bridgeville Fire Company volunteer in 2005. He began dating Katey Algier in 2007 and she began managing of the on-farm produce market before marrying in 2009. Katey handles sales and marketing for the farm and The Frozen Farmer, and a number of her family members work for the company, many of them coming on board after business successes on their own.

When Kevin’s parents took over the family farm, they changed it from selling fruits and vegetables to a primarily grain operation that produced corn, soybeans and wheat. When Kevin got involved in managing the farm, he returned it to its roots as a vegetable-based operation with a retail shop and packing facility. But through it all, Evans Farms has focused on offering superior quality produce to its customers and grocery partners and knowing all its customers by name.
