Randal Von Steuben is cool under pressure. He’s also not afraid of a challenge as he has taught autism and special education math to low-income students in the Wilmington area for 15 years.
At Skyline Middle School, he was a homebound tutor and taught all three grades, 90% of which were low income students most of the time. In 2019, Steuben started teaching sixth through 12th grade students with autism in the Red Clay School District. In between planning math and social studies courses, he also organized weekly day outings for as many as 40 students with autism. Along the way, he furthered his own studies with a master’s degree in school administration and will soon complete a master’s in school guidance counseling.
Outside of the classroom, Steuben is NCAA Division I college soccer referee and he’s hit milestones such as officiating at three Big East Finals, the inaugural Ivy League Final and the prestigious Army-Navy Game held at the Philadelphia Union stadium. His expertise also extends to youth levels of sports as well as the Special Olympics, where he volunteers his time and skills to foster inclusivity and sportsmanship.
In the past, he led a parade through New York City with World Famous acrobat Nik Wallenda and has been heavily involved in the Baron Von Steuben German-American society which also runs a parade in NYC. Steuben has traveled and volunteered at schools in low income areas on six continents, most notably India, China and South Africa, as well as the country of Morocco and various cities in North America. He and his wife recently visited the Philippines to maintain roots in his wife’s culture. The two have a son, nicknamed Philly Philly, as the pair met the night before the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl LII.
