Title: Executive Director of Oncology Services & Cancer Center Operations
Workplace: Beebe Healthcare
Age: 38
Maurice Winkfield is a man who thrives in a challenge – and perhaps there is no greater challenge than working in the oncology ward amid a global pandemic.
The executive director oversees all operations of Beebe Healthcare’s Oncology Service Line, taking the top job in August 2020 and overseeing 15 providers and over 120 employees. Because a cancer diagnosis does not wait, Winkfield quickly reconfigured his team to seamlessly continue care for patients in an otherwise uncertain time.
When health care workers were pushed to the brink and many health care systems had to drastically cut back on non-emergency procedures – and cutting into revenue – Winkfield and his department were able to improve their finances. He also helped oversee the opening of Beebe’s second cancer center and a standalone emergency department in Millville amid the pandemic.
As Beebe’s staff continued to be hit hard by the emotional and mental fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, Winkfield rolled out Code Lavender, a quick response crisis intervention tool for those who may need it. He also prioritizes his staff’s options for recovery through mindfulness practices and other activities to boost morale.
Outside the office, he also actively volunteers with the Giving Hands Society at Beebe Healthcare as well as the Miracle Mile, which celebrates cancer survivors in the Sussex County community. The Miracle Mile was able to raise $20,000 in 2020. In addition, Winkfield volunteers and donates to Girls on the Run, a program focused on empowering young girls.
