As Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation’s energy services manager, Emily Greene is keen on saving people money on their energy bills. Greene literally wrote Delaware’s regulations for evaluating energy efficiency, and she helps businesses and individuals implement energy efficient practices in their own lives.
Greene created a $2 million energy efficiency program in eight municipalities that will save customers $5.7 million in energy costs over the lifetime of the products that were installed.
She frequently partners with local communities to educate people about low-to-no cost ways to save money on their energy bills. She even taught a class through the Delaware Public Libraries’ Inspiration Space on improving small businesses’ profits by reducing operation costs through energy efficiency.
After a speeding motorist hit and killed a man in Greene’s neighborhood of Wyoming, Del., last year, Greene began serving on the town’s planning and zoning committee, board of adjustments, special events committee and economic development committee.
While Greene was in college and pregnant with her first daughter, her doctor discovered what was believed to be evidence that the baby had experienced a stroke. But after Greene had an emergency cesarean delivery, doctors discovered that the baby actually had an arachnoid cyst, which they successfully operated on when the baby was just 10 days old. Despite the challenges of being a new mother, Greene earned a double major in energy management and renewable energy solar, graduating Magna Cum Laude in both.
Today, Greene and her oldest daughter often go on trash hunting adventures where they fill large trash bags with as much litter as they can find while walking along their favorite trails. Greene and her family also participate in the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Coastal Cleanup and take frequent trips to Bowers Beach to flip beached horseshoe crabs.
