Recently promoted to a team leader on Discover Financial Services’ Check Exception Resolution team, Cortnae Justice has had to learn on the fly how to manage a team of employees during the coronavirus pandemic. But as the company has adapted to working from home, she embraced the changes as an opportunity to engage employees in new ways.
Justice has organized virtual stretch breaks and even a virtual team outing, with online games such as Kahoot, to boost morale and improve the well-being of her team members. She also serves as a liaison within her employee natural work group to plan to implement work-life balance initiatives.
Since starting her career with Discover eight years ago, Justice has helped improve company efficiency, reduce expenses by about $150,000, and promoted risk reduction. She also organized a specialized team to combat a fraud attack in the organization, that is now equipped to mitigate future fraud attacks and losses.
Justice has been an active member in the Black Organizational Leadership @ Discover, an internal employee resource group dedicated to providing cultural support and experiences to employees. As part of that group, she has sought to make employees feel more comfortable and supported discussing diversity and recent events related to the Black Lives Matter movement.
As a mentor for youth at the New Castle County Detention Center and New Castle Elementary School, Justice has promoted conflict resolution strategies, life skills and methods for coping with stress and anxiety.
During the pandemic, Justice partnered with the Police Athletic League of Wilmington to mentor students virtually about money management, anger management and conflict resolution.
Raised in a large family, Justice was the fifth of eight children and has 18 nieces and nephews. She enjoys spending time with family, participating in outreach programs for her church, attending Zumba classes, going to the movies, visiting the beach, playing laser tag, zip lining and cooking.
