Introduction: Matt Georgov and his father, Bruce, started Choice MedWaste in 2015 with the goal of becoming our community’s No. 1 resource for infectious waste disposal. In addition to safe, reliable and cost-efficient disposal services, Choice MedWaste’s team exceeds customers’ expectations while providing solutions to any business challenges their clients face.

Why should you be chosen for DBT 40?  I should be chosen for DBT 40 because of my experiences moving from a corporate career to starting my own business. After graduating college, I went right into the corporate banking world. After seeing the challenges that come with working for such a large corporation, I switched my focus to entrepreneurship. Family business has been engraved in me since I can remember. My parents both ran their own real estate company while my father also started his own solid waste company. I enjoy selling my business, problem-solving new challenges and working directly with customers. With my own business, I am learning new skills each day as every day is different. These past years have been some of the most rewarding and challenging years of my life and I look forward to continuing to grow this company and help others along the way.

Professional accomplishments: My most important professional accomplishment is starting a business with my father that supports a full-time driver and hundreds of facilities throughout our community. Our first year we started with less than 100 customers bringing in $39,000 from family and friends we knew in the health-care space. After three years we have grown four times the size in both customers and revenue. This fourth year looks to be the best yet with projected growth of 35%. Now that I have a few years under my belt, I have the confidence to sell my services, products and story to anyone in the country. We even started servicing clients in Texas, Rhode Island, and the Carolinas due to our network of haulers.

Vision for Choice MedWaste: My vision for my company is to become the largest Delaware-based medical waste disposal company. As we continue to add clients, we want to be the local resource for our health-care facilities, residents and state regulators regarding infectious waste concerns. Once we add enough volume to our business, my goal would be to open the very first medical waste treatment center in Delaware. Our facility could process medical waste from neighboring states and help safely dispose of our local waste. This would give our healthcare facilities a local disposal option rather than transporting their waste over large distances for treatment.

Community service: From golf outings to formal galas, we support Delaware Hospice, Sojourner’s Place, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware and Exceptional Care for Children to name a few. One of our biggest accomplishments thus far has been helping our local residents dispose of their needles and sharps. There is a huge risk of being stuck with a needle in the solid waste and recycling industry. Home-generated sharps can come from reproductive medicines, diabetics or event pets. Right now, the best practice is to place them in a rigid and puncture proof container for final disposal in the normal trash stream. However, a lot of these sharps end up exposed in the normal trash stream or sent for recycling. There are numerous instances of solid waste employees being stuck by needles and even more at the recycling centers where they hand sort some of the final products. This past year we worked with a local coalition, SN4C, out of Middletown, to provide a safe disposal option for home generated sharps. During the DEA’s national drug take-back day, we collected almost 200 pounds of needles.

Tell us a few things that aren’t on your LinkedIn profile.  First and foremost, I love to fish and be near the water. I am a certified open-water scuba diver and enjoy being on anything from a kayak to a deep-sea fishing boat. I studied abroad in Hong Kong, Australia, and Switzerland during my time at University of Delaware. I also have a bit of experience in real estate management as my family manages student housing in Newark.

What was your favorite work moment in the past year? Picking up a damaged shipment of organic honey from a distribution center and delivering the shipment to a pig farmer for feed.

Where are you most at ease? Anywhere near water — ocean, lake, pond, river.

What’s your hidden talent? I can sing every song without knowing any of the words.

Biggest missed opportunity? Uber — I swear I thought of it first!

First job? Server at Klondike Kate’s.

What advice would you give to yourself 10 years ago? Don’t be afraid to tell someone no.

Family and education: My parents are Bruce and Diane. I have a younger brother, Ryan. I have a bachelor’s degree in operations management and finance with minors in international business and entrepreneurial studies from the University of Delaware.
