Amy Cherry has dedicated her professional life to telling Delaware’s stories, and after a decade doing so for WDEL, the award-winning former journalist has found a new way to share those stories through her roles at the University of Delaware and the Local Journalism Initiative of Delaware.

Cherry’s decade-plus career at WDEL as assistant news director and senior enterprise journalist led to reporting that uncovered corruption, held government officials accountable and sparked legislation leading to solutions. In late 2021, she pivoted her storytelling career to a role with UD where she produces content about innovative research and the successes of health sciences faculty and staff for university publications such as UDaily and others.

She serves as board chair of Delaware’s Local Journalism Initiative, where she is currently working to help establish Spotlight Delaware, a nonprofit newsroom that will be committed to covering public policy statewide. She is also an active member of other local and national organizations, including the Delaware Press Association, and has given back to the community through programs like New Castle County’s Dial-a-Story program, which provides free access to recorded stories at local libraries, and as a judging coordinator for the volunteer-run Delaware Burger Battle supporting the Food Bank of Delaware and Delaware ProStart’s culinary programs.

The first-generation college student enjoys spending time with her French bulldog named Stanley, who participates with her in the Faithful Friends Pet Therapy Program. In her free time, Cherry loves to travel and continues to hold a side gig anchoring news for stations across the United States.
